Powell and Pressburger: A Matter of Life and Death

One of our favorite filmmakers is the duo of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. From the 1930s through to the 1970s, Powell & Pressburger (with their production company known as The Archers) made over a dozen movies together. They rank as some of the best of cinema, and Ashley & Matt are going to -- over the next several months -- discuss The Archer films that they've seen.

We hope you enjoy this exploration of the films of two great filmmakers. We've enjoyed their work immensely, and the movies inhabit a diverse range of genres, settings and topics. We'll be posting one Powell & Pressburger podcast per month, and will start with their 1946 classic A Matter of Life and Death.

Taking place in the waning days of World War II, A Matter of Life and Death starts with pilot David Niven on the radio with operator Kim Hunter, as his plane is going down after sustaining heavy damage. From there, things get strange and wonderful...
